While I'm doing this I still need to survive. While I'm walking I'll still have a small cost of living that I'll need to cover and, as mentioned elsewhere, it's not unreasonable for people planning something like this to take that out of the sponsorship. For obvious reasons I'd rather not do that so as much of the money that has been pledged to the charities gets to them.

With this in mind, this is me putting my hand out asking for your charity. I'm not asking a lot. I'm a big believer in micropayments making things less painful so I'm going to put it in terms most of my friends will understand.

If I've ever bought you a pint or you think I'm the sort of person that you'd be happy buying a pint for, then please consider the options in the paypal subscription form to the right. I'm expecting this walk to end before April as I've got a conference I want to attend. When I've completed the walk I'll send out an e-mail to all that have sponsored me this way so they can cancel the subscription. I'm assuming that I should be able to do this myself (and I'll confirm and update this page asap) when I'm done but the mail will go out regardless so you can ensure it has actually been cancelled.

Photography

If I manage to sell this I'll be getting a decent camera and I'll be taking a lot of photos on this trip. Many will be posted as I go and will have a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 New Zealand License. It was suggested that these could be worth quite a bit to companies in the tourism or advertising industry. So with that in mind the first item I'm selling is full commercial rights to all of photographs taken on the walk that don't have a person as the primary feature of the photo. I'll collect details of people as I go so contact can be made with them should the use of their photos be wanted.

Advertising space

I have a number of tattoos. All of these represent something important in my life and I figure that even making a serious try at Te Araroa will fall into that category. So I'm getting something that will look like a stylized Te Araroa logo regardless. Can't get the actual thing for copyright and branding reasons.

I recall a back in 2008 Air New Zealand ran an advertising campaign using, what they termed, "cranial billboards". Basically a bunch of people had their heads shaved and the slogan "The end of the domestic checkin queue is coming" was stenciled on with henna paste. These people got $1000 for a couple of weeks. I figure something a little more permanent should get a bit more.

With this in mind I'm looking at selling the space below the Te Araroa logo. The tattoo will be on the side of my right calf and will be worked in to the Te Araroa logo somehow. The trail markers are typically posts with the logo at the top of them (at least on the City to Sea walkway they are) so I'm thinking the sponsor will get a space as wide as the Te Araroa logo and 1-2 times the height. Due to the nature of this I reserve veto rights on what ever design is suggested. I'm planning on traveling a bit after the walk so this may be suitable for someone in the tourism industry.

I've already had a couple of people I've mentioned this too say that it's an insane idea but I've also had more say it's crazy enough to work and that it's kind of cool. The way I see it, if someone is willing to give me the money to allow me to achieve this and ultimately raise funds for Christchurch I think it's a good and worth while trade.

Regarding the duration of the advertising I'm looking at 2 years minimum. The more offered though, the longer I'll agree to leave it there.
