Another Walkabout?

Wouldn't you know it?  Longest distance in one day yet and I don't have cell coverage to tell people about it...

Anyway, the day. It started out wonderfully. No wind and the sun was out with very little cloud cover.

Rain occurs in all sorts of forms.  There's intermittent rain, which comes in stops and starts. There's heavy rain that tends to have big fat drops. There's drizzle which is a sort of light rain that is reasonably consistent. There's a new type of rain I experienced today. I call it "You have to be frakking kidding me" rain. It's what you get when you add heavy rain to gale force winds. Big heavy drops that leave you feeling like you've been repeatedly punched in the face. A lot. For a long time.

Notes
Early start
Longer that expected, Google Maps directions may have followed a different route, I followed the road signage.
Staying at a Top10, dodgy first dorm(current occupants were raking up almost every flat surface and it smelled like a locker room after a game. Stupidly high humidity in the room didn't help either. It was bad enough I asked for another. Was met with distrust and hostility from the person on duty. Cannot recommend this place and will not stay here again.

Notes:
Took alt route over unsealed road that cut about 15km of the day. (verify where this happened. This might have been of yesterday)
Got a call from Patrick regarding a site fix (yep, this was yesterday)
My networks rock. Colin lives in Whangarei and offered access so I could fix the site.
Also offered dinner and crash space (although I was already set up at local camp.)
Broke a tent pole. Was Hong took need to replaced them anyway, but didn't expect them to fail liked this. Taped it up sufficiently.

The forecast today was supposed to be wet. Really wet. Headed of with warm gear on and all the wet weather gear. That was a waste of time...

More to come later;

Notes:
Dodgy tyre.
Lack of cycle stores on the way in to town.
Bike barn - spokes tightened.
AvantiPlus - New peddle & rare tyre.
New distance record.

Turns out there's not really any affordable accommodation around the halfway mark from here to Auckland so it was going to be a short run to Rangiriri today followed by a big push into Auckland tomorrow.

With the short ride today I didn't feel ant rush to get on the road. Took advantage of this to enjoy David and Annette's company a little longer. When I did move on Annette took photos for a post on the local community website that they manage. :) I hate photos... :)

Good early start. The weather was looking dodgy though. I thought the rain yesterday was reasonably light. Bits of today forcibly drove that opinion home. The run to Cambridge was similar to yesterday with respect to the frequency but about 3 to 4 times heavier. After leaving Cambridge though there wad no rain until I reached Gordonton.

The ride itself was nothing special. Changing the destination to Gordonton instead of Hamilton added about 10km to the day and probably cut as much of the trip as I was skirting the city instead of passing through it.

The issue with Mitchell sorted itself out this morning.  Police showed up to collect contact details and to verify his status. Talking with them out of earshot of Mitchell they seemed concerned he may be a run away and just wanted to ensure he's capable of looking after himself. It turned out that his parents were going to come and pick him up.
Steve mentioned to me that he was the one that called in the police. He shared the same concerns I did.
