The trail form the Telford campsite to the Lower Wairaki hut is well marked even if the trail is a little raw through the forest.
The highest point of the walk over the tops was just over 1km above sea level. Standing there and looking out over the terrain I've covered in the last weeks worth of walking. I'm feeling like I'm making progress. The target of 20-30km/day is still a bit beyond me but I do feel good about the progress now.
On the way down I was lucky enough to encounter a group of pigs. They didn't seem that disturbed by my presence either. They trotted off, but they didn't run for it.
The Lower Wairaki hut is nice. Technically this is referred to as a bivvy. Tomorrow I'm heading for Aparima Hut which is an actual "hut". It'll be interesting to see the difference. Got the tent dry. Lots of dew from last night.
